1. Start With The Connected City
HK clients often search for Mainland China lawyer, China lawyer and Shenzhen lawyer as if they were the same. In practice, the lawyer first checks the connecting point: where the counterparty is located, where the contract is performed, where the assets are, and which authority or court is involved.
Even when the client wants a Shenzhen lawyer, jurisdiction may still point to another city, the counterparty location, the asset location or the place of contract performance.
- Counterparty company or individual location
- Contract performance or transaction location
- Mainland property, equity or bank account location
- Court, police, customs, registry or bank location
2. Separate The Matter Type
Commercial payment recovery, detention, inheritance, HK documents for Mainland use and IP infringement require different routes. Separating the matter type lets the lawyer decide whether the next step is litigation, negotiation, legal letter, notarization, witnessing or urgent meeting.
- Contract, payment, equity, arbitration or litigation
- Family member questioned or detained, or executive criminal risk
- Mainland property, inheritance, marriage or divorce assets
- HK documents for courts, banks or registries in Mainland China
3. Prepare The Minimum Useful Documents
The first consultation does not require every document, but it should include enough material for route screening. Scattered screenshots may help initially, but original documents, full chat records, contracts, payment proof and formal notices should be kept.
- Identity or company documents
- Contracts, orders, payment and messages
- Notices, summons, court or authority documents
- A short timeline in chronological order
4. Ask Fees Together With Work Scope
Lawyer fees depend on scope. A consultation, legal opinion, legal letter, litigation agency, criminal meeting, notarized document transfer or long-term retainer follow different fee structures.
A better question is: are the current materials enough for route assessment, what type of work is needed next, and what third-party costs may appear at each stage?

Frequently asked questions
Can a client in Hong Kong engage a Mainland China lawyer directly?
The matter can be screened first. Whether formal authorization, notarization or document transfer is needed depends on the matter type, court or authority requirement, and foreign identity documents.
What should be sent in the first consultation?
Send the city, matter type, counterparty details, timeline and received documents first. The lawyer can then list missing contracts, payment records, identity or notarization documents.
